Honoring Black Panther Party allies: The Chicano Revolutionary Party (CRP)
The 1960’s was a time when the activism of hundreds of thousands of protesters of many different ethnic groups created coalitions. From the Young Lords to the Peace and Freedom Party, from the Yippies (Youth International Party) to Rising Up Angry, the Black Panther Party formed coalitions with antiwar and radical activist. The Black Panther Party was about “All Power To All The People”, whether you're black, white, blue, green, yellow, or polka dot. We believed in black unity, but only as a catalyst to help humanize the world. The Black Panther Party worked for self-determination and social justice for all people.
The Chicano Revolutionary Party was a close ally of the Black Panthers. In 1969 The Black Panthers helped the CRP start a Free Breakfast program for Latino and Black Children in the Fruitvale district. The Free breakfast program was based out of Mary help of Christians Church on E9th St in Jingletown. Like the Black Panthers The Chicano Revolutionary Party was targeted by the FBI COINTELPRO
The Chicano Revolutionary Party (CRP) was based out of East Oakland's Fruitvale District. The CRP as they were known began in 1968 created by Chicano and Latino students and Community members as a Chicano vanguard for the Chicano Community of East Oakland. The Chicano Revolutionary Opened an Office on 1423 Fruitvale Ave. The CRP began programs to educate The local Chicano community on several issues Ranging from Police Brutality, Immigration issues, Housing Rights, and more. The CRP also began a community newspaper called La Chispa dealing with local issues. Like the Black Panthers the CRP did nightly patrols against Police brutality. If they saw someone getting arrested they would observe the Police and would tell the person being arrested what their rights were.

The so-called "Socialist Equality Party" (SEP) has one of the worst programs and records of any of the splits coming out of the degeneration of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP). While other groups remain part of the workers movement, the SEP and its for-runners in the Workers League crossed class lines. For financial aid from Saddam Hussein they turned over lists and photos of Iraqi communists. This was at a time when Saddam Hussein's U.S. backed regime was murdering communists. For years the SEP promoted, without evidence, the lie that the leadership of the SWP were FBI agents. In addition, the group is funded by a non-union capitalist in the paper industry in the United States, and the group, with capitalist funding opposes unions. The following is an article from the newspaper Workers Vanguard exposing how the SEP denies racism in the case of Trayvon Martin. In addition, my most recent post on African American Vernacular English was responded to by the SEP with two articles they wrote against so-called "Ebonics". While I disagree with Workers Vanguard on a number of questions, I support their principled stand on the SEP found in this article.

"Anti-Socialist Inequality Party; SEP Denies Racism in Trayvon Martin Killing"2012-07-06 from "Worker's Vanguard" newspaper [www.icl-fi.org/english/wv/1005/sep-trayvon.html]:
Outside of stone racists, Tea Party yahoos and those among the zoo of reactionaries contending for Republican presidential candidate, there were few who openly denied the bitter truth that 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was killed in cold blood by a racist vigilante simply because he was black. But cries from those like Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum that to portray Martin’s killing as a “racial issue is fundamentally wrong,” “disgraceful” and divisive found an echo from an organization that calls itself the Socialist Equality Party (SEP). A March 31 statement by the SEP’s presidential candidate Jerry White opined: “The killing of Trayvon Martin is not fundamentally about race.” White concludes by urging a “fight for socialism.” The notion that the socialist liberation of the working class means denying the reality of black oppression in this country—a cornerstone for the edifice of capitalist rule in America—is a grotesque but accurate measure of the political sensibilities animating the SEP.

A subsequent SEP article on its World Socialist Web Site titled “The Killing of Trayvon Martin and Racial Politics in America” (wsws.org, 5 April) by its National Secretary Joseph Kishore allows that “racial prejudice may [!!] have played a role in the killing of Martin.” But he asserts that the eruption of massive protests had nothing to do with race, much less the daily reality of racist terror against black people in this society. That Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, saw a young black man in a hoodie as a dangerous predator also is of no consequence to Kishore. Instead, he presents this cop wannabe as one of many “disturbed individuals” whose “violent actions” are the product of the “tensions building up in American society” as a result of the current economic crisis. This is kind of like describing lynchings in the Jim Crow South as the product of the economic dislocations resulting from the destruction of slavery but…having nothing to do with race.
Kishore presents such arguments as a statement of supposed working-class opposition to the Democratic Party, which he proclaims is using “the killing of Martin to promote the reactionary politics of racial identity.” As evidence, Kishore points to an observation by Jesse Jackson that “racial profiling is all too common in the US, and has led to the killing of a young man.” Who other than an apologist for racism or perhaps an escapee from an asylum for the criminally insane could deny that this is an elementary statement of fact? The problem isn’t that Jackson, Al Sharpton and others of their ilk are fanning the flames of outrage against racist reaction in America. On the contrary, their purpose is precisely to contain such outrage and keep it safely in the channels of pro-Democratic Party electoralism.

The SEP and Victor Berger -
In its articles on Martin, the SEP polemicizes against the International Socialist Organization (ISO) and other leftists who did their bit in promoting the “change we can believe in” credentials of Barack Obama as U.S. imperialist Commander-in-Chief. But, far from exposing such pro-Democratic Party belly crawling, Kishore’s article opened the door for the ISO to try to present its organization as genuine fighters for “socialist equality,” including for black people.
In a letter attributed to ISO honcho Sherry Wolf that is posted on wsws.org (19 April), she thanked Kishore for his article, saying that she had circulated it to ISO members as a “useful example of lunk-headed indifference to racism in the name of socialism.” In reply, Kishore argued: “Socialists have never denied or ignored the existence of racism. However, the historic position of the socialist movement has been that the struggle against racism and all forms of oppression must be based on the fight to unite all workers, on the basis of their common class interests, against the capitalist system.” In fact, to unite workers around their common class interests requires championing the rights of black people, immigrants and other minorities who are a vital part of the proletariat. As Karl Marx put it, “Labor cannot emancipate itself in the white skin where in the black it is branded.”
Any organization claiming a revolutionary perspective must take up the fight against the special oppression of black people in the U.S. The forcible segregation of the black population at the bottom of this society has been integral to capitalist rule in America since the days of slavery. Poisonous anti-black racism fomented by the bourgeoisie has long been a barrier to the proletariat developing a consciousness of itself as a class, crippling its struggles against the capitalist class enemy.
The position that Kishore puts forward is indeed “historic,” the history being that of the American Socialist Party, which included the likes of outright white supremacist Victor Berger. Even the best elements of the early socialist movement, such as Eugene Debs, who opposed all racial prejudice, treated the question of black oppression as simply part of the workers struggle against capitalism and no more. As James P. Cannon, a founder of the American Communist movement and later of U.S. Trotskyism, wrote in “The Russian Revolution and the American Negro Movement” (printed in The First Ten Years of American Communism [1962]): “The old theory of American radicalism turned out in practice to be a formula for inaction on the Negro front, and—incidentally—a convenient shield for the dormant racial prejudices of the white radicals themselves.”
This changed when the victory of the 1917 Russian Revolution, as Cannon put it, “began to thunder its demand throughout the world for freedom and equality for all national minorities, all subject peoples and all races.” The Communist International under the leadership of Lenin and Trotsky’s Bolshevik Party fought with the early American Communists to champion the fight for black rights. The Bolsheviks understood that, far from “dividing” the working class as the SEP would have it, the fight for black freedom was critical to uniting the American proletariat in struggle for its own emancipation from capitalist wage slavery.
Since our inception, the Spartacist League has fought for the program of revolutionary integrationism: fighting to mobilize the multiracial working class against every manifestation of racial oppression as part of arming the workers for the struggle for proletarian socialist revolution. This is the only road to achieving genuine and full equality for the black masses through their integration into an egalitarian socialist society.
In contrast, the SEP’s conscious opposition to even the mention of racial prejudice in the Trayvon Martin case is no aberration. Such contemptible indifference to special oppression has been a hallmark of this organization and its predecessor, the Workers League (WL), for decades. This was put most crudely by former WL leader Tim Wohlforth who, in the early 1970s, told a group of young New Left Maoists: “The working class hates faggots, women’s libbers and hippies, and so do we!” Such views were indeed those of the AFL-CIO bureaucracy at the time under George Meany, who had nothing but racist contempt for the fight for black rights or those of anyone else. Yet, at the height of Vietnam antiwar protests and the upheavals in the black ghettos, the WL urged that Meany’s AFL-CIO form a “labor party” on a program that omitted any mention of the war or the fight for black liberation.
After current SEP head David North took over as WL leader, its press, the Bulletin, denounced the Spartacist League as having “a grotesque fixation with the issue of race.” This was its response to the 5,000-strong labor/black mobilization on 27 November 1982—initiated and led by the SL—which successfully drove a gang of Klan terrorists off the streets of Washington, D.C. Integrated unions in the D.C./Virginia region, particularly from longshore with its heavily black membership, helped build the mobilization. They recognized that stopping the fascists was not just a defense of black people and minorities but also of the entire labor movement against its most deadly enemies. Not the Northites, who condemned the mobilization as “A Revisionist Frenzy Over Klan” that elevated “race” over “class.”

The Civil Rights Movement -
It is absolutely true that the ISO’s calls for a “new civil rights movement” are aimed at refurbishing the credentials of Jesse Jackson and other black Democrats, whose purpose is to re-elect Obama. But the SEP itself peddles its own version of Obama’s “end of racism” myth. For the SEP, to raise the question of racism over the killing of Trayvon Martin is to “subordinate political thinking to an unchanging template of racial politics,” adding “as though nothing had been accomplished by the civil rights struggles of the 1950s and 1960s” (“Behind the Right-Wing Racial Politics of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton,” wsws.org, 1 May). This position invests the civil rights movement with essentially eliminating discrimination against black people, a convenient alibi for the SEP’s retrograde views. Although it defeated Jim Crow segregation in the South, when the civil rights movement came North it ran up against the mass unemployment, poverty and rampant police brutality in the black inner cities that are part of the very fabric of American capitalism.
The leadership of the civil rights movement under Martin Luther King—who looked to the Democratic Party and capitalist state for redress—would not and could not wage the necessary struggle against these conditions. Today the SEP tries to present MLK as some kind of anti-capitalist fighter, crediting him with the understanding that “the oppression of blacks was fundamentally a question of class.” Despite its admonition that King was “not a revolutionary socialist” (no kidding), the SEP’s whitewash of him is the same myth peddled by the ISO. It simply comes from a different vantage point, one based on the revolting argument that “attempts to present racism as the ‘core’ of American society are false and reactionary.”
The lengths to which the SEP will go to present its own “false and reactionary” view of American history can be seen in Jerry White’s February 13 election platform. The words “black people” and “racism” are never mentioned. Instead, White rhapsodizes that: “This country was founded on the principle that ‘All men are created equal’.” That was the stated principle but what was embedded in the United States Constitution was slavery. It took a bloody Civil War to smash the Southern slavocracy, but you wouldn’t know it from reading White’s platform, which reduces the Civil War to the pledge that “government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.” The abolition of slavery merits no mention.

Political Bandits -
In 1970 we recalled Lenin’s term “political bandits” to describe the SEP’s forebears, the Workers League and Gerry Healy’s International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI) to which it was affiliated. Such an organization will fly any flag as long as it is perceived as advancing its own episodic, and often grotesque, opportunist appetites. When called for, they had the ability to wield Marxist orthodoxy, which was but a mask for violations of any and all known Marxist principles.
For years, Healy’s ICFI was the bought-and-paid-for PR agency for various Near East despotic regimes. When these crimes against the working class were exposed, his loyal lieutenants, including David North, cried that it was all Healy’s doing. But none of them raised a peep when the money was still pouring in. Indeed, the Bulletin joined in publishing an article hailing the murder of 21 Iraqi Communist Party members in 1979. Healy’s ICFI provided many such services and was handsomely rewarded by the rulers of countries including Iraq, Kuwait, Libya and Abu Dhabi. After Healy was ousted, North proclaimed himself the new leader of the ICFI.
After years of pandering to the AFL-CIO tops, North used the occasion of the counterrevolutionary destruction of the former Soviet Union to declare that the unions are “direct instruments of imperialism” and must be destroyed. Doubtless, he was buoyed in this pronouncement by the role his organization had played in supporting the imperialist-backed forces of counterrevolution that destroyed the former Soviet workers state. At the same time, years of crawling before bourgeois-nationalist regimes in the Near East were reversed with North proclaiming that any and all struggles for national self-determination must be vigorously opposed.
So should you run across an Internet tome taking up the world economic crisis on the SEP’s wsws.org that sounds vaguely like “orthodox” Marxism: beware! Devoid of any class basis or connection to reality, North and his gang can and will say or do anything. Today, they are slyly giving aid and comfort to the racist enemies of those outraged by the killing of Trayvon Martin. We can only speculate about whose or what interests are served by the Northites. One thing is for certain, it is not the interests of the multiracial working class here or internationally.

My name is Kent Gooch.  I was a USMC scout-sniper and Scout-sniper instructor from 1979-1989 as well as a US Army National Guard sniper instructor from 1995-1998.  I have also written articles on the subject for multiple US magazines, co-wrote a book “The Military and Police  Sniper” and conducted Police and Military competitions and training here in the US and Austria.
I am writing to tell you that the Shutzstaffel “SS” symbol has a deeper meaning than the USMC is aware of. The USMC spokesmen at Camp Pendleton have no idea of what they are talking about and the Marines that are using it aren’t probably even aware of the history of the “SS” usage, particularly with the 1st Marine Division Scout –Snipers, which is where it started.
This whole thing started with the Neo-Nazis led by Tom and John Metzger of Fallbrook, California in the 80’s.  There were a few Marines at 1st Reconnaissance Battalion who were active with the neo-nazi’s.  One of them was pretty well known as a recruiter.  I heard of this Marine from a friend of mine who was a fellow scout-sniper instructor with me at the USMC Scout-sniper instructor school (SSIS) in Quantico, Virginia from 1982-1986.  My friend was stationed at 1st Recon before coming to the SSIS and mentioned this Marine in passing when talking about weird characters we had met over the years.  Believe me, this “nazi” Marine wasn’t well looked upon.  (I actually ran into the neo-nazi Marine while stationed at Marine Corps Security Forces, Pacific in 1992 or so.  He had been assigned as a student at MCSF and I was the Officer in Charge of weapons training.  I noticed a Nazi “Blood and Honor” tattoo on his arm and asked him if he was ever in 1st Recon Bn.  He replied he had been.  I then asked him if he was still a Nazi and he kind of turned pale and replied “No Sir, I gave it up for Lent”.  I turned him in to the unit commander and he had his security clearance revoked and was assigned to other duties.)
Back to SSIS.  About 1984 a SSgt was assigned to SSIS who had been the head instructor at Camp Pendletons scout-sniper school.  He brought out patches and drawings that were being popularized at the 1st Mar Div school and units.  They included skull and crossbone designs and the “SS” symbols.  The skull and crossbone design was exactly the same as the one used by the White Aryan Resistance (WAR) crew out of Fallbrook.  These designs caught on with the mentally challenged and less mature element of the scout-sniper community.  Some of the guys event went so far are to getting a version of the “SS” tattooed on their calves, so as not to attract attention, unless of course they were at physical training wearing shorts… it was all very stupid.  And apparently the mentality of some of the scout-sniper community hasn’t improved much since then.
The “SS” even made it to the Army National Guard sniper program.  In 1995 some of the Army National Guard snipers developed a challenge coin that had the “SS” on one side.  A soldier was “caught” with one, at a bar of all places and an official US Army investigation ensued and a directive went out that the “SS” symbol was not allowed.  I still have one of the coins.
Having said all of this I am positive that there is no dark “Marathon Man-ish” conspiracy within the USMC scout-sniper program.  I imagine if the community were interviewed they would almost all show a deep respect for Israel and the IDF.  But there also may be a “respect” of sorts for the dedication of the “SS” soldier but most of them probably don’t understand the whole history of the Waffen and the holocaust as most of American society get their history lessons from MTV these  days.
What you DO have is a bunch of boys that can shave, showing their stupidity and ignorance by carrying on this unauthorized and shameful tradition and the Marine Corps spokesmen don’t have a clue to the history of this “SS” stuff and its connections to the Neo-Nazis in Fallbrook.
I would suggest a look at the book series “DEATH FROM AFAR” by Rocky Chandler.  You’ll find a ton of evidence in those books.

Deputy military chief of general staff Major General Jiri Halaska, who was in charge of foreign missions, has submitted his resignation.Back in early November, Czech soldiers Hynek Matonoha and Jan Cermak were caught wearing symbols of two most infamous SS combat units of WWII on their helmets: the 9th SS panzer division Hohenstaufen and the SS Dirlewanger brigade. Matonoha and Cermak were, subsequently, fired from the armed forces also. BITTER enmity between Ukraine and Russia could be rekindled after the Kiev authorities launched a criminal investigation into a devastating famine that claimed millions of lives, stating it was an act of genocide orchestrated by Moscow.
More than 70 years since the famine struck Ukraine, which was then part of the Soviet Union, the country's prosecution service believes it has enough evidence to begin criminal proceedings.
A statement issued by Ukraine's security service the SBU, said that through murder, the forcible collectivisation of agriculture, dispossession, deportation and confiscation, the Soviet authorities had "aimed at organising hunger to kill the Ukrainian people as an ethnic group".
It went on: "The Stalinist regime wanted to create living conditions that would result in the total physical elimination of ethnic Ukrainians."
Although estimates of how many people died in what Ukrainians call the Holodomor, which ravaged the nation in 1932 and 1933, conservative estimates have put the death toll at more than seven million.
Ukraine has long maintained that Stalin wanted to wipe out the Ukrainian people, because of their questionable loyalty to the Soviet Union and their stubborn adherence to age-old farming practices that stood in his way of the plan to destroy private agriculture.
In the early 1930s, Stalin launched a brutal campaign of collectivisation and requisition across Ukraine that few historians dispute turned a natural famine into a human tragedy of massive proportions. Eye-witness accounts from the time speak of whole villages being obliterated by starvation and disease, and people resorting to cannibalism to stay alive. Often, the authorities prevented survivors fleeing the famine-stricken regions in fear that if news got out, it would damage the credibility of Stalin's regime and policies.
The Ukrainian government has waged a long campaign in the international arena to have the famine classified as genocide, while some Ukrainian nationalists argue that Russia, as the successor to the Soviet Union, should now be held responsible.
However, the Russian government disputes the genocide claim, pointing out that famine and starvation struck other regions of the Soviet Union at the same time. It also argues that so far no evidence, such as a paper trail, clearly stating that the Kremlin wished to starve Ukraine has ever come to light.
With Ukraine and Russia at odds over links to the West and energy, Kiev's genocide claims have assumed a political dimension. Some in Russia consider Ukraine's willingness to open old wounds as evidence of its determination to antagonise Moscow and seek sympathy in the West.
Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, has charged Ukraine's pro-western president, Viktor Yushchenko with exploiting the famine for "instantaneous political goals", while General Vasily Khristoforov, head of the registration and archives department at Russia's federal security service, dismissed the Holodomor as a "Ukrainian invention".
Ukraine's decision to push ahead with a criminal investigation could fall under the scrutiny of a new Russian commission, appointed by Mr Medvedev last week and charged with guarding against "the falsification of history at the expense of Russian interests".
But opposition to the inquiry also comes from within Ukraine, with some politicians questioning the sense of investigating events of 70-plus years ago.
"From the legal point of view, what the security service is doing is absurd," said Gennady Moskal, a member of parliament. "Who will criminal charges be brought against? Maybe against a cemetery? Who can be brought to justice? If a person was 18 years old in 1933, then how old are they now when criminal proceedings are beginning?"

The American Government is surprised by the position the Arabs are adopting towards it, in relation to the Palestinian question. In the whole of this affair, America sees only humanitarian work and this is the basis on which it has made promises to the Jews; but the British have a different position, and the American Government expresses surprise that the Arabs consider it to be the only ones showing them hostility and threatening them with the Jews.
First of all, they say, the Balfour promise is British, not American.
Second, Great Britain wishes to exploit the Arab‐Jewish conflict because it is the only way for it to remain in Palestine, to dominate all the Arab countries.
The American Government strongly desires to find a friendly settlement between the Arabs and the Jews, but it is convinced that the British colonial authorities will do everything to prevent that, as Great Britain wishes for incidents to worsen in Palestine and for disorder, where blood is spilt, to take place.
Our interest, as far as I can see, is to find a definitive settlement, to work for the withdrawal of Great Britain from Syria and Palestine and for the plan the American Government will put forward concerning the definitive settlement of the Near East question. I believe that such a plan would win the agreement of all the states, except of course Great Britain.

The mission of General Clayton, head of the special section of Arab Middle Eastern affairs, has two aims:
First: to convince us that Syrian unity will come about;
Second: to seek an understanding between Syria and Turkey.
For the understanding with Turkey we have confirmed to him that we have given our agreement and that we want it within the limits of the British memorandum that has been presented to us.
As for unity, he presents us with two plans:
‐ Syrian unity including Syria, Transjordan and part of Palestine with a plebiscite on the nature of the regime and on the choice of king if the regime is a monarchy.
‐ Arab unity including Iraq, Syria, Transjordan and part of Palestine. Then the king would be Faisal (King of Iraq) and there would be three guardians to the throne. Laws, rules, armies etc., would be unified.
Having highlighted our clear will for independence and having asked his opinion on France’s attitude and the agreement concluded with it, he said, “This is not under discussion; when you want unity everything will be settled with France.”
Our replies were negative, but were tied to Great Britain’s attitude towards us by comparison with France. If Great Britain attained the removal of French troops from Syria and Lebanon it will then be possible for us to discuss the plan he has presented. Before that, any discussion is impossible.

For the seventh time I call Your Excellency’s attention to the intrigues of British officers who have the upper hand over the army of Transjordan from where aggression is directed against Syria and Syrian independence.
What makes the situation even more delicate is that the plot organized against Syria is welcomed by all the British officials in the Near East.
Neither the Syrian government, nor the Syrian people, would ever have thought that Great Britain had helped Syria drive France out so that British sovereignty could replace French sovereignty in Syria, for Transjordan and King Abdullah, as is well understood, are working to achieve British sovereignty and British interests and no more.
To prove our good intentions, I place before Your Excellency the Soviet memorandum which was presented to us and to which we have so far refused to reply.
But if the British Government were to push us to despair, we would have recourse to any foreign aid whatsoever to safeguard our independence which, today, is threatened more than at any other time in the past.
I hope that you will want to undertake an act that will put an end to the state of extreme tension which, in the Middle East, creates a man with illegitimate appetites who acts with the acknowledged inspiration and advice of the British.

It appears that the resolve of the Arab states regarding the struggle over Palestine has grown stronger over the last few days.
They have suddenly realized their considerable loss of prestige in the entire world if they abandon Palestine to the Jewish enterprise after so much ranting.
They would prefer risking a military defeat rather than inaction, which they consider to be a disgrace. All the states have decided on an extensive military effort with quick and massive action, whatever the price, against the Jewish State itself, hoping that a sudden and violent strike, using all the means available to the Arabs, would lead to a favorable outcome before the Jews, under vigorous attack in the vital areas of their territory, would have time to rally and organize themselves. Arab military circles rely on the lack of heavy weapons (artillery, tanks) and war planes on the Jewish side, for the success of the operation.
The beginning of action is planned for May 15, and it appears that 1) the first main objective of the regular armies will be Tel Aviv itself, and 2) the Arabs have considered the aerial bombardment of this city. The region of Tel Aviv will be the goal of the Egyptian army. (Knowing the Arabs, we can’t rule out, without making any guesses, that not many of them would be prepared for a blitzkrieg.)
The Egyptian troops will be gathering at al‐Arish. The British oppose their crossing the Palestinian border before May 15.
The Iraqi troops are concentrated in Mafraq, the Syrian troops in Kuneitra.
The Lebanese troops, already in place on the Lebanese‐Palestinian border, don’t appear to have to take an active part in the operations, but to make only some demonstration intended to hold back a part of the Zionist strength……………..
The removal of Ismail Pasha Safwat from his post as Commander of the Arab forces must have been
motivated by his refusal to acquiesce in the British orders concerning the future progression of operations in Palestine, notably the question of Haifa, which Safwat wanted to attack and take over. The British opposed this, wanting to keep the port for the evacuation of their troops. Safwat protested. Abdullah and the Iraqi Regent gave in to the British demands. Safwat was removed from office and replaced by the Iraqi Division General, Nur a‐Din Mahmmud, the Regent’s man, whose compliance with the British is well‐known.
The American government’s proposal – conveyed a few days ago to the Arab states and consisting of extending the British mandate over Palestine by ten days in order to facilitate an agreement between the Arabs and Jews – would have been accepted, it appears, straightaway by Azzam Pasha, Riyad al‐Sulh, Jamil Mardam and Haj Amin al‐Husseini, but rejected by King Abdullah. The others, even if they didn’t want to, would then agree with him, in the present circumstances – not wanting to appear less enthusiastic defenders of an Arab Palestine than the Hashemite sovereign.
Certain circles in Damascus fear the consequences, after May 16, of the USSR’s recognition of the establishment of the Jewish State and the immediate conclusion of a Judeo‐Soviet treaty, on the positions of the Americans and the British vis‐à‐vis the Jewish State.
