* "Iraq War: From 'Operation Iraqi Freedom' to 'Operation Inherent Resolve' and beyond" (2022-03-19, presstv.ir/Detail/2022/03/19/678844/Iraq-War-From-Operation-Iraqi-Freedom-Operation-Inherent-Resolve) [archive.ph/7RjHf], video (https://preview.presstv.ir/ptv///SiteVideo/20220319/iraq.mp4):
Nineteen years ago today, then-US President George W. Bush announced the beginning of “Operation Iraqi Freedom” from the Oval Office, invading a sovereign nation to destroy its non-existent weapons of mass destruction, in a senseless war that has brought the Iraqi people anything but freedom.
At the time, Bush and Tony Blair, Britain’s then-prime minister, declared that their war coalition aimed to “disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, to end Saddam Hussein’s support for terrorism, and to free the Iraqi people,” even though UN inspectors had found no evidence of programs of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
“None of those pretexts will really help us explain the overall project that the US had in this region,” Tim Anderson, director of Centre for Counter Hegemonic Studies, told Press TV.
Since the invasion, more than one million Iraqis have been killed and millions more have been displaced. Sectarian violence, widespread displacement, poverty, and diseases such as birth defects and cancer have also sharply increased. But the leaders and commanders of the war have never been charged for any of their crimes.
“The war on Iraq was one of hate wars in West Asia/North Africa, which the US was carrying out in service of its plans to create a so-called New Middle East, where the entire region would be under the tutelage of the US and its key allies – Israelis and the Saudis,” Anderson said.
Operation Inherent Resolve -
In 2011, after seven years of carnage in Iraq, the US officially withdrew all of its troops, only to return to the country three years later under a new pretext, namely fighting the Daesh (ISIS) terrorist group. This time, the re-occupation of Iraq occurred under what Washington called “Operation Inherent Resolve,” which brought with it a new round of chaos and bloodshed to the oil-rich country.
Despite its claims of fighting Daesh, the US has repeatedly targeted the position of anti-terror forces in recent years. In 2020, the US assassinated prominent Iranian and Iraqi commanders, Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who had played a significant role in the final defeat of Daesh in 2017.
Iraqi resistance groups have been vehemently calling for the withdrawal of all American forces from their country, while, as observers say, the US is trying to create new crises in the Arab country to prolong its presence there.
Americans don’t care I -
Throughout the course of the war, the Americans committed countless atrocities in Iraq, as a result of which the Iraqis will suffer for years to come. But a video, titled Collateral Murder which was published by WikiLeaks over a decade ago, best captures how American soldiers, commanders, and leaders commit crimes against the people of Iraq – and by extension the Middle East – and how they feel about them.
The video shows the aerial view of an attack by a US Apache helicopter on a crowd of Iraqis in 2007. It depicts the indifference of the pilots as they open fire at the civilians and after they are informed that two children were killed in the attack.
“Well, it’s their fault for bringing their kids into a battle,” one of the pilots said to the other in a calm, uncaring voice. The other responds: “That’s right.”
Americans don’t care II -
While there are many more instances of how American politicians and officers dismiss the killing of civilians in the Middle East and elsewhere as “collateral damage,” it is worth mentioning remarks made by former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright long before the US invaded Iraq.
On May 12, 1996, a reporter asked Albright about the impact of US sanctions on the Iraqis: “We have heard that half a million children have died. I mean, that’s more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?”
Then she infamously replied, “We think the price is worth it.”
Americans don’t care III -
Fast forward to 2022, only days into Russia’s military offensive against Ukraine, another former US secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, fascinated observers by condemning the attack as a “war crime,” without a hint of irony about her own involvement in the killing of more than one million Iraqis in the illegal US war.
In an interview on Fox News on February 27, Rice, one of the key architects of the Iraq War, nodded along as Fox News host Harris Faulkner said, “I have argued that when you invade a sovereign nation, that is a war crime.”
“I think we are at just a real basic point there,” Faulkner added, as Rice nodded in solemn agreement, before responding, “It is certainly against every principle of international law and international order.”
In the lead-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Rice falsely claimed that former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein had “weapons of mass destruction.” She infamously declared before the war that “we don’t want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud.”
Americans don’t care IV -
Other recent examples of the American – and also European – indifference toward human life in the Middle East include the racist coverage of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as Western commentators and reporters grieved over the loss of life in a “civilized” country that is nothing like “Iraq or Afghanistan.”
“This isn’t Iraq or Afghanistan. [Kiev] is a relatively civilized city where you wouldn’t expect this to happen.” CBS correspondent Charlie D’Agata said while reporting from the Ukrainian capital.
On the French channel BFM TV, a commentator noted that “we’re not talking about Syrians fleeing bombs of the Syrian regime backed by [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, we’re talking about Europeans leaving in cars that look like ours to save their lives.”
Journalist Ulysse Gosset remarked that “we are in the 21st century, we are in a European city, and we have cruise missile fire as though we were in Iraq or Afghanistan, can you imagine!”

Douglas S. Blaufarb, 82, a retired Central Intelligence Agency operations officer whose posts included two years in the 1960s as chief of station in Vientiane, Laos, died Dec. 20 at a hospital in Winchester, Va. He had myelodisplasia.
As station chief in Laos, Mr. Blaufarb managed a so-called secret army of native tribesmen, including the Hmong, who fought the North Vietnamese in the mountains of northern Laos. For his work in these operations, he received the CIA's Intelligence Medal of Merit.
He began his intelligence career in Greece in the early 1950s, when he helped establish and manage radio facilities for a U.S.- and British-supported guerrilla action in Albania. The action failed because, as it was later learned, it was betrayed by H.A.R. "Kim" Philby, a high-level British Secret Intelligence Service official who was working for the Soviets.
In 1953, Mr. Blaufarb's tour in Greece ended, and he was sent on other missions around the world, serving in Saigon, Singapore and Vientiane, as well as at CIA headquarters. He retired from the agency in 1970 and spent the next two years doing international security affairs analysis for the Rand Corp.
He also wrote "The Counterinsurgency Era," which was published by the Free Press in 1977. In 1985, The Washington Post's Book World carried an article of noteworthy books dealing with the conflict in Vietnam, highly praising Mr. Blaufarb's work.
The article said that Mr. Blaufarb "understood what very few American officials ever learned: that the strengths and weaknesses of the two Vietnamese sides were the decisive factors in the war and that the United States, for all its power, had almost no ability to change those qualities."
Mr. Blaufarb, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and a 1941 graduate of Harvard University, received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. From 1941 to 1950, he was a radio news writer and editor with Voice of America in London and New York.
A former District resident, he maintained a home in the Washington area from the 1950s until retiring to West Virginia in 1980. He lived in Three Churches, W.Va.
In later years, he wrote, did consulting work and engaged in farming.
His wife of 48 years, Marjorie Warrilow Blaufarb, died in 1992. Survivors include his wife, Dorothea Friar of Three Churches; four children from his first marriage, Ingrid Hughes of New York, Nora Blue of Edinboro, Pa., David Blaufarb of Silver Spring, and William Harrison of Santa Cruz, Calif.; a sister; and nine grandchildren.

Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777-1836), a supporter of the abolition of the slave trade, played a role in a transaction which was significant in advancing the abolitionist cause. In August 1833, the British government led by the reformist Whig Earl Grey, passed the Slave Emancipation Act, giving all slaves in the British empire their freedom, albeit after a set period of years. Under the terms of the Act, slave owners received compensation for the 'loss of their slaves' in the form of a government grant; in contrast, enslaved people received no compensation. Compensation was abhorrent to abolitionists, such as Nathan, but under the leadership of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton MP, enough came to accept it as a necessary evil in order to achieve the greater goal of the abolition of slavery.
The 1833 Act did not come into force until 1 August 1834. Nathan Rothschild was the contractor (with other members of a consortium) for the ‘West India loan’ of 1835 (also referred to in some sources as the ‘West Indies loan’) which raised the greater part of the £20 million required by the British government to make the compensation payments. On 29 July 1835 Viscount Melbourne and Thomas Spring Rice (Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer respectively) explained the terms of the contract to around thirty interested parties. The loan would not be raised through a bond issued by a banking house but through the sale of British government consols and long annuities to the highest bidder. Concerns were expressed about the wisdom of removing so much money from circulation, and the ability of the Bank of England to supply sufficient bullion to meet subscribers’ obligations. Perhaps as a result of these concerns, on Monday 3 August 1835 only one tender was presented, all others having been withdrawn: the remaining tender was from “Mr Rothschild, Mr Montefiore, Mr Ricardo, Sir J. Reid”. It fell below the Treasury’s reserve offer, but after some short consultation, the group agreed to accept the government’s terms.
Regretfully, as is common for many of the early loan issues of the London house, there appears to be very little trace of the West India loan in the holdings of the Archive. As the loan did not take the form of a bond issued by the London bank, there is no documentation in the loans series. Nathan Mayer Rothschild died in 1836.

Once in Newport, Duarte Lopez was circumcised and took the name
Aaron. His papers, including many in the archives of the Newport Historical
Society and the American Jewish Historical Society at the Center for Jewish History in New York, document his involvement in Atlantic trade.Operating within
the British, Dutch, Spanish, and Portuguese empires, Lopez’s ships sailed to
the British Isles, the Netherlands, the Iberian peninsula, along the eastern seaboard of North America, the Caribbean, Central America, South America, and
the western coast of Africa. Although they were far-reaching, Lopez’s mercantile connections were not unusual within the Sephardic network of the Atlantic
world.
Lopez frequently sent ships and cargo to Charleston, South Carolina,
where Isaac Da Costa, a business partner, was well established. Da Costa was
KKBE’s first hazzan and in 1753 purchased the land that became the congregation’s cemetery. Listed on the cemetery deed are several Jews from Charleston
and beyond, including Moses and Aaron Lopez of Newport.8
Among the goods that Lopez exported to Charleston were: spermaceti
candles (made from sperm whales), furniture, axes, flour, and salted fish. The
Newporter also brought slaves from western Africa. For example, in 1763 he imported 134 slaves from the “Guinea coast.” Five years later, he brought another
63 slaves to Charleston. [end excerpt]

One of the Few Maps Showing East & West Florida During the British Colonial Period
A highly detailed representation of Archipelagic Florida divided into East and West Florida.
One of the earliest maps to focus on what would become the State of Florida and an excellent example of Florida depicted as an Archipelago, showing Southern Florida as a group of about 50 massive islands and a number of wide navigable water routes from the Gulf to the Atlantic.
The map is rich with place names and other early details. One of the most detailed maps of Florida for the period and one of the most curious.
British East and West Florida -
Under the terms of the 1763 Treaty of Paris, which ended the Seven Years' War (the French and Indian War), Spain ceded Spanish Florida to Britain. At the same time, Britain received all of French Louisiana east of the Mississippi River, with the exception of New Orleans, from France. Determining the new territory too large to administer as one unit, Britain divided its new southeastern acquisitions into two new colonies separated by the Apalachicola River: East Florida, with its capital in the old Spanish city of St. Augustine, and West Florida, with its capital at Pensacola.
British West Florida comprised parts of the modern U.S. states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Effective British control ended in 1781 when Spain captured Pensacola. The territory subsequently became a colony of Spain, parts of which were gradually annexed piecemeal by the United States beginning in 1810.
The settlement of East Florida was heavily linked in London with the same interests that controlled Nova Scotia. The East Florida Society of London and the Nova Scotia Society of London had many overlapping members, and Council frequently followed their suggestions on the granting of lands to powerful merchant interests in London.
Both Floridas remained loyal to Great Britain during the American War of Independence. Spain participated indirectly in the war as an ally of France and captured Pensacola from the British in 1781. In the 1783 Treaty of Paris, which ended the war, the British ceded both Floridas to Spain.

Original royal blue decorated cloth with gilt title and design to cover and spine. B&W frontispiece and plates and numerous illustrations in text. An extraordinary collection of magical and astrological lore, apparently assembled largely by "cutting and pasting" from earlier volumes. It would be an interesting exercise to try to ascertain just what de Laurence's sources were, but they appear to include Eliphas Levi (the cover design is obviously copied from the 1913 Rider edition of Levi's "The History of Magic"), Ebenezer Sibley; Raphael; etc. etc. - he has even snuck in the classic horror story "The Storm" by Sarah Elizabeth Utterson (1781–1851) but retitled "The Midnight Storm" and without any attribution (the inference being that de Laurence himself had written it). The publisher, Lauron William de Laurence (1868 - 1936), was a renowned book pirate, plagiarist, and publisher of occult literature. de Laurence was notorious for taking other people's works and reissuing them under his own name (sometimes retitling them in the process). For all his faults and eccentricities de Laurence played an important part in the occult history of the USA: he was a pioneer in selling occult books and supplies by mail order, and the books that he published were received with great fervor by many in the American occult community. The volume has the year 1918 on the copyright page, and while de Laurence publications are notoriously difficult to date, all indications are that this is probably its year of publication and that this was the first edition thus.
