In the drowsy hours of a December afternoon, eight American Marines strolled into the headquarters of Haiti’s national bank and walked out with $500,000 in gold, packed in wooden boxes.
They drove the loot by wagon to the shore, past American soldiers in civilian clothes who kept watch along the route. Once at the water, they loaded the boxes and sped to an awaiting gunboat.
The gold was in the vault of a Wall Street bank within days.
The operation took place in 1914 — a precursor to the full-scale invasion of Haiti. American forces took over the country the following summer and ruled it with brute force for 19 years, one of the longest military occupations in American history. Even after the soldiers left in 1934, Haiti remained under the control of American financial officers who pulled the country’s purse strings for another 13 years.
Invading Haiti was necessary, the United States said. The country was so poor and unstable, the explanation went, that if the United States didn’t take over, some other power would — in America’s backyard, no less. Secretary of State Robert Lansing also portrayed the occupation as a civilizing mission to end the “anarchy, savagery and oppression” in Haiti, convinced that, as he once wrote, “the African race are devoid of any capacity for political organization.”
But decades of diplomatic correspondence, financial reports and archival records reviewed by The New York Times show that, behind the public explanations, another hand was hard at work as well, pushing the United States to step in and seize control of Haiti for the wealth it promised: Wall Street, and especially the bank that later became Citigroup.
Under heavy pressure from National City Bank, Citigroup’s predecessor, the Americans elbowed the French aside and became the dominant power in Haiti for decades to come. The United States dissolved Haiti’s parliament at gunpoint, killed thousands of people, controlled its finances for more than 30 years, shipped a big portion of its earnings to bankers in New York and left behind a country so poor that the farmers who helped generate the profits often lived on a diet “close to starvation level,” United Nations officials determined in 1949, soon after the Americans let go of the reins.
“I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues,” Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler, a leader of the American force in Haiti, wrote in 1935, describing himself as a “racketeer for capitalism.” [...]
For more than a century, Haiti has been labeled a disaster, a basket case, a place so destitute, indebted, lacking and lawless that it needs constant saving. The assassination of the president in his bedroom, the kidnappings in the capital, the swells of Haitian migrants heading to the United States — they all point to a country in a seemingly endless vortex of despair that the world’s great powers, whether with troops or mountains of aid, have not managed to fix.
But the documents and financial records reviewed by The Times in Haiti, the United States and France show how much of Haiti’s misery has been brought by the outside world — and how often intervention has been portrayed as a helping hand.
By the time U.S. forces arrived in the summer of 1915, Haiti had already spent more than half a century handing over big slices of its meager earnings to France. Though the Haitians had overthrown their French enslavers, beaten Napoleon’s forces and declared their independence in 1804, French warships sailed back to Haiti decades later, demanding staggering amounts of cash under threat of war.
Haiti became the first and only country where the descendants of enslaved people paid the families of their former masters for generations, hampering its ability to build a nation almost since birth.
After that came French bankers, dangling loans before a country that had been depleted by decades of paying France. They took so much in commissions, interest and fees that, in some years, their French shareholders’ profits were bigger than the Haitian government’s public works budget for the entire country.
Next were the Americans, at times portraying their intervention as a way of defending Haitian “sovereignty.” And just as it had for generations of Parisian bankers, Haiti proved profitable for Wall Street. In its filing to the Senate Finance Committee in 1932, National City Bank said it secured one of its largest margins during the 1920s from a debt it controlled in Haiti.
Little of that history remains part of Citigroup’s public profile today. Haiti is barely mentioned in its official timeline. The company declined to provide access to its archives and said it was unable to find any information on some of its biggest loans to Haiti.
But according to nearly two dozen annual reports published by American officials and reviewed by The Times, a quarter of Haiti’s total revenue went to paying debts controlled by National City Bank and its affiliate over the course of a decade — nearly five times the amount spent on government-run schools in Haiti during that time.
And in some years, the American officers who controlled Haiti’s finances spent more of its money on their own salaries and expenses than on public health for the entire nation of about two million people.
“We have had absolute domination” by the United States, Georges Léger, a Haitian lawyer, told American senators in 1932, explaining how deeply Haitians resented the financial and political control of their country “just to satisfy a group of New York bankers.” [...]
The United Nations experts who visited in the late 1940s, shortly after the end of American financial control, found an impoverished nation lagging “even more markedly than other countries and territories of the region.” Most towns had no lights, sewage systems or paved streets. As few as one in six children attended school.
American financial officers had been so focused on paying off Haiti’s loans — including the ones the United States had imposed on the country over strident objections — that a commission appointed by President Herbert Hoover to investigate the occupation questioned “the wisdom of this course.”
“It might have been better,” its report said in 1930, to have kept “more money in the country where experience has shown it was badly needed.” [...]
By the early years of the 20th century, Haiti sat at the nexus of multiple American interests. It was across the Caribbean Sea from the Panama Canal, which was under construction. The United States had taken over Puerto Rico and American money had flooded into sugar plantations in Cuba. Import and export taxes in the Dominican Republic, which shares an island with Haiti, were under American control.
The French still exerted sway in Haiti, but in 1910, the United States saw an opening to gain a foothold: the reshuffling of Haiti’s national bank.
The bank was national in name only. Controlled by its board in Paris, it had been set up in 1880 by the French bank Crédit Industriel et Commercial to deliver eye-popping profits for its French investors and shareholders. It controlled Haiti’s treasury — the Haitian government could not even deposit or spend money without paying commissions to it — but the Haitian authorities eventually accused the national bank of fraud, jailing some of its employees.
As Haitian distrust of the national bank deepened, investors from France and Germany scrambled to recast it under new European ownership. The United States cried foul: The State Department called the proposal a threat not only to the United States, but also to the welfare and independence of the Haitian people.
One top State Department official lashed out at the 1910 deal as “so detrimental to American interests, so derogatory to the sovereignty of Haiti” that it could not be permitted.
Secretary of State Philander Knox invited a few Wall Street banks to Washington and encouraged them to invest in Haiti’s national bank. Four American banks, including the National City Bank of New York, bought up a significant portion of the bank’s shares. Another slice went to a German bank. But the largest piece stayed in Paris.
No Haitians had a controlling stake. The National Bank of the Republic of Haiti was, once again, run by foreigners.
“It was the first time in the history of our relations with the United States that they intervened so openly in our affairs,” wrote Jean Coradin, a Haitian historian and former ambassador to the United Nations.
Soon after it was set up, the new national bank did what its predecessor had: charge the government for every deposit and expense, while generating big profits for its shareholders abroad. It also issued a loan to the Haitian government. After commissions and profits were deducted, Haiti received about $9 million — but still had to pay the full face value of nearly $12.3 million. [...]
At the time, National City Bank’s footprint in the country was expanding, and Wall Street began exerting its leverage over Haiti’s leaders by withholding the money it controlled at the national bank.
In the months to come, the State Department adopted what diplomats called the “Farnham Plan,” laying out the American takeover of Haiti’s import and export taxes, a vital source of the country’s income.
Though the Americans were still minority stakeholders in the national bank, Farnham later told Congress that France eventually became far too consumed by World War I to run it, so “active management has been from New York.” The State Department drafted a convention based on Farnham’s plan and sent him to help deliver it.
Haitian lawmakers assailed their minister of foreign affairs over the deal. They accused him of “endeavoring to sell the country to the United States” and even tried to deliver their fury through “severe blows,” forcing him to flee the National Assembly “amidst the wildest excitement,” according to a State Department telegram.
The national bank punished them for their defiance: It held back funds, and Haiti’s government, already reeling from political and economic turmoil, became even more unstable. The country changed presidents five times in three years during successive coups, some financed by German merchants who traded in Port-au-Prince, American officials said at the time.
Then, in December 1914, the State Department stepped in more forcefully. Bryan authorized the Marine operation that seized $500,000 in gold after a last-minute consultation with Farnham. [end excerpt]

Thomas Devine was born in around 1926. After the Second World War he joined the Central Intelligence Agency. According to a de-classified memo, Devine left the CIA in 1953 to help his associate, George H. W. Bush to establish the oil company, Zapata Oil. Other major investors included Prescott Bush and Bill Liedtke.
In 1954, Zapata Off-Shore Company was formed as a subsidiary of Zapata Oil, with George H. W. Bush as president of the new company. According to Bush's autobiography, Eugene Meyer, the publisher of the Washington Post, and his son-in-law, Philip Graham, were major investors in the new company.
Zapata Corporation split in 1959 into independent companies Zapata Petroleum and Zapata Off-Shore, headed by George H. W. Bush, who moved his offices from Midland to Houston. In 1960, Bush created a new company, Perforaciones Marinas del Golfo (Permargo) with Edwin Pauley of Pan American Petroleum. Pauley is alleged to have had close ties to Allen Dulles. During the Second World War Pauley aided the Dulles brothers former clients in shifting Nazi assets out of Europe.
In 1963, Zapata Petroleum merged with South Penn Oil and other companies to become Pennzoil. In his book Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty (2009) Russ Baker argues: "For Devine, who would have been about twenty-seven years old at the time, to resign at such a young age, so soon after the CIA had spent a great deal of time and money training him, was, at minimum, highly unusual. It would turn out, however, that Devine had a special relationship allowing him to come and go from the agency, enabling him to do other things without really leaving its employ."
After the sale of the company, Devine became a member of the investment firm of Train, Cabot and Associates in New York City. According to a CIA memo this was an “investment banking firm which houses and manages the (CIA) proprietary corporation WUSALINE.” John Train was one of the founding editors of the CIA-connected The Paris Review.
Devine later rejoined the CIA under non-official cover (NOC) status on 12 June 1963, as a covert commercial asset for Project WUBRINY/LPDICTUM. Joan Mellen points out that: "This CIA document reveals that Thomas Devine had informed George Bush of a CIA project with the cryptonym WUBRINY/LPDICTUM. It involved CIA proprietary commercial operations in foreign countries."
Mellen goes onto argue that this links George H. W. Bush to George de Mohrenschildt and Lee Harvey Oswald. "WUBRINY involved Haitian operations, in which, the documents reveal, a participant was George de Mohrenschildt, the Dallas CIA handler of – Lee Oswald." Russ Baker interviewed Devine in 2008 and he refused to say whether he was involved with WUBRINY. However, another CIA officer, Gale Allen, confirmed in another interview that Devine did take part in the project.
Devine continued to work closely with George H. W. Bush. According to the CIA memo Devine "accompanied Bush on a trip to Vietnam from 26 December 1967-11 January 1968, for which he was issued an interim top-secret clearance by the US Department of Defense." Russ Baker has suggested that there might be a link with the controversial Phoenix Program.

Mr. Vachon has the agriculture and industrial concession on the sugar‐rich Plaine de Torbeek. in the Southwest. He is to build a badly needed 30,000‐ton sugar mill in the area.

A Haitian exile who ran for president of his island nation in 1987 was arrested Thursday on charges he operated a bogus bank that may have bilked customers out of tens of millions of dollars, a federal prosecutor said.
Clemard Joseph Charles, who was granted asylum in the United States nine years ago, and three others purported to run the Banque Commerciale D’Haiti from a home in Queens and a mortgage company from a luxury apartment overlooking Central Park in Manhattan, authorities said. Neither concern was authorized to operate in the state.
U.S. Attorney Andrew J. Maloney said the victims of the scheme, which ran for about two years, ranged from drug dealers to international financiers.
″What makes this operation so unusual was the brazenness, the chutzpah,″ Maloney said. ″They never moved out of a location, they never left town. That makes it a little extraordinary.″
Investigators will not know how many people and financial institutions were cheated and how much money the scams earned until records seized by FBI agents during raids Thursday are examined, Maloney said.
The bank apparently cheated its customers out of tens of millions of dollars, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles W. Gerber, adding ″we don’t really have a handle on it.″
In one complex transaction, the bank recently issued bogus multimillion- dolla r letters of credit payable to the Palestine Liberation Organization and the economic ministries of Iraq and Libya, Maloney said.
The letters of credit for $2 million each from the PLO and the two countries were used to finance the campaign of a politician from the Dominican Republic, Haiti’s neighbor on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, according to Maloney.
According to court papers, the scheme began to unravel last October when National Westminster Bank USA attempted to regain losses on a $5 million letter of credit issued by Banque Commercial D’Haiti.
Maloney said he could not yet explain how the phony bankers had managed to continue to operate without detection or retaliation.
Authorities said Charles, 66, came to this country in 1980 after he was freed from a Haitian jail where he spent 10 years for opposing former President Francois ″Papa Doc″ Duvalier. Charles was one of 35 presidential candidates in the violently aborted Nov. 29, 1987 general elections.
If convicted of bank fraud and other charges, Charles and the others would face at least 10 years in jail, heavy fines and forfeiture of property purchased with their earnings, Maloney said.
He identified the other suspects, all listed as officials of the bank, as Arthur Aye, 74; Charles’ son, Victor, 43, and Peter Hall, 50. All are from New York.
Aye was freed on a $100,000 secured bond, but U.S. Magistrate Carol Bagley Amon ordered the others held pending a hearing on Tuesday.

On June 19, 1992, the United States conducted an underground nuclear bomb test in Nevada. Another test was conducted only four days afterwards. Three days later, a series of heavy earthquakes as high as 7.6 on the Richter scale rocked the Mojave desert 176 miles to the south. They were the biggest earthquakes to hit California this century. Only 22 hours later, an "unrelated" earthquake of 5.6 struck less than 20 miles from the Nevada test site itself. It was the biggest earthquake ever recorded near the test site and caused one-million dollars of damage to buildings in an area designated for permanent dispoasal of highly radioactive nuclear wastes only fifteen miles from the epicenter of the earthquake. Although the quake provoked renewed calls for a halt to plans for storing radioactive materials in such an unstable area, the larger questions have still not been raised in the United States: Do bomb tests actually cause earthquakes? Do nuclear tests make the planet more prone to geologic disruption?
An apparent correlation between nuclear explosions and earthquakes has been reported for the events between September 1961 and September 1966. When data from the events between September 1966 and December 1968 are examined, this correlation disappears. No relationship between the size of the nuclear explosions and the number of distant earthquakes is apparent in the data. Why? Remember the Alaska earthquake of 1964.
An unconfirmed report by the Russian Northern Fleets says the Haiti earthquake was caused by a flawed US Navy 'earthquake weapons' test before the weapons could be utilized against Iran. United States Navy test of one of its 'earthquake weapons' which was to be used against Iran, went 'horribly wrong' and caused the catastrophic quake in the Caribbean, the website of Venezuela's ViVe TV reported, citing the Russian report. After the report was released, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez also made a similar claim, saying that a US drill, carried out in preparation for a deliberate attempt to cause an earthquake in Iran, had led to the deadly incident in Haiti, claiming more than 110,000 lives. It’s gets better, the day before the Haiti earthquake the United States government was preparing disaster relief.

But some scientists who have studied the correlation between the 1,800 nuclear explosions since Hiroshima and ensuing earthquakes are concerned that there may be a connection after all.
British and German geophysicists raised the concern in a British scientific journal that the 1978 earthquake in Tabas, Iran, which killed 25,000 people, may have been triggered by a large Soviet detonation 36 hours before at the Semipalitinsk test range. A study by scientists at Japan's Tokai University concluded that earthquakes "are related in a direct cause-and-effect to testing of nuclear devices."
The most comprehensive investigation was done by Dr. Gary T. Whiteford, a professor of geography at the University of New Brunswick, who studied all the earthquakes this century over 5.8 on the Richter scale. Whiteford's study found an average of 68 large magnitude quakes per year in the first half of the century. Since the advent of nuclear testing, the number has jumped to 127 per year, with "geographical patterns in the data," according to Whiteford. [end excerpt]

Project Faultless -
Scientists around the world have recognized and documented several mechanisms by which human activities have resulted in earthquakes. Scientists from the Institute of Dynamics of Geospheres at the Russian Academy of Sciences have observed:
Induced seismicity, or seismic activity caused directly by human involvement, has been detected as a result of water filling large surface reservoirs, development of mineral, geothermal and hydrocarbon resources, waste injection, underground nuclear explosions and large-scale construction projects. If the stress change is big enough, it can cause an earthquake, either by fracturing the rock mass — in the case of mining or underground explosions — or by causing rock to slip along existing zones of weakness.
Underground nuclear explosions have set off earthquakes. The best documented of these occurred deep in the vast Nevada desert in 1968. Under the codename “Project Faultless,” the U.S. government set off a nuclear weapon on a fault line to see if they could induce an earthquake — and got one! The U.S. has been engaged in testing nuclear weapons since 16 July 1945, when the atomic test code-named “Trinity” was conducted near Alamogordo, New Mexico.
Project Faultless was detonated on 19 January 1968 at a depth of 3,200 feet below ground surface in a remote part of Nevada. Officially, Faultless was designed to study the behavior and characteristics of seismic signals generated by nuclear detonations and to differentiate them from seismic signals generated by naturally occurring earthquakes. It was intentionally placed on a fault line to see if the high yield explosion would set off an earthquake. It has been argued that the scientists in charge were convinced that such was impossible, hence the name “faultless.”
Michon Mackedon has served as Vice Chairman of the Nevada Commission on Nuclear Projects since 1986. She tells us the story of this successfully induced, albeit seemingly unintentional earthquake in her article, “Project Faultless: Central Nevada’s Near Miss as an Atomic Proving Ground”:

Over the next four decades, The Nevada Test Site became home to 928 nuclear tests. One hundred of the tests conducted there were atmospheric tests — dropped by aircraft or exploded from towers, balloons, or cannons — producing the signature mushroom cloud and dangerous radioactive fallout. In 1963, under the terms of a Limited Test Ban Treaty signed by President Kennedy and Russia’s Kruschev, all the tests were moved underground. The remaining 828 NTS nuclear tests were conducted in shafts and tunnels. […]
The move to underground testing, while reducing fallout danger, produced ground motion which could be felt in Las Vegas. The larger the test the greater the ground motion: the swaying earth and occasional shattered glass window were making tourists, residents, and casino operators quite nervous. … [Casino owner] Howard Hughes stepped into the picture to add more pressure on the AEC to move megaton testing away from Las Vegas to central Nevada. Hughes became convinced that the increasingly large underground tests at NTS would ruin the Vegas gaming industry. He became quite vocal in his opposition to megaton testing at NTS, and his organization even tried to delay one of the larger NTS tests. …
On 19 June 1992 the U.S. conducted an underground atom bomb test at the NTS which was followed by another test just four days later. A series of heavy earthquakes as high as 7.6 on the Richter scale rocked the Mojave Desert 176 miles to the south three days after the second test. Only 22 hours after that an “unrelated” earthquake of 5.6 struck less than twenty miles from the NTS itself. It was the biggest earthquake ever recorded near the test site. It caused one million dollars in damage to buildings at Yucca Mountain, the intended site of the nation’s high-level repository for radioactive waste. The Yucca Mountain facility was only fifteen miles from the epicenter of the earthquake.
In a statement issued on 14 July 1992 responding to the “understandable unease” expressed by the public, the Department of Energy (DoE) in Washington, D.C. — having conveniently forgotten Project Faultless — asserted the relationship between nuclear testing and earthquakes was “nonexistent.”
Evidence for this “nonexistent” connection may well be seen in events that occurred prior to the largest earthquake of the 20th Century, which took place in Tangshan in North-East China on 27 July 1976. It measured 8.2 and killed 800,000 people. Only five days earlier the French had tested a bomb in the Mururoa atoll in the Pacific. Four days later the United States tested a bomb in Nevada. Twenty-four hours later the earthquake hit China. Merely a “coincidence”? Many scientists don’t think so. For example, New Scientist reported on 12 October 1978:
Geophysicists in Germany and England believe the 1978 earthquake in Tabas, Iran, in which at least twenty-five thousand people were killed, may have been triggered by an underground nuclear explosion. … British seismologists believe the Tabas earthquake implies a nuclear test that has gone awry. … Moreover, a seismic laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden, recorded a Soviet nuclear test of unusual size — ten megatons — at Semipalitinsk only thirty-six hours before. … One German scientist specifically implicated this test in the origin of Tabas disaster. After nuclear testing was moved underground, a series of problems at NTS drew the eyes of nuclear planners to a section of land in Nye County's Hot Creek Valley, approximately midway between Eureka and Tonopah, where plans were quietly laid to develop a supplemental nuclear proving ground.
One of the problems faced by test administrators was the growing tourist economy in Las Vegas. In the early years of atomic testing, the Las Vegas community was quite small, and most of the residents and tourists who visited there accommodated atomic testing as part of the overall Las Vegas experience. Visitors even scheduled special trips to the area during "bomb season" to drink "atomic cocktails" while they awaited the dramatic spectacle of an exploding atomic bomb.

The larger the test the greater the ground motion: the swaying earth and occasional shattered glass window were making tourists, residents, and casino operators quite nervous. Texas House Member Tom Moore, Jr. (who served McLennan County as a Democrat from 1967 to 1973), was tired of those in the Texas House of Representative not thoroughly reading through legislation.
On April 1st of 1971, with the help of Republican Representative Lane Denton, he decided to draw up a rather strange proposal, and submit it to the State House. Without a single word of complaint from any of the other 148 members of the House, the bill passed unanimously. What all were unaware of, was that the act was set to memorialize Albert de Salvo, who is better known as The Boston Strangler.
Some of the charter read:
This compassionate gentleman's dedication and devotion to his work has enabled the weak and the lonely throughout the nation to achieve and maintain a new degree of concern for their future. He has been officially recognized by the state of Massachusetts for his noted activities and unconventional techniques involving population control and applied psychology.
It was only after the statute passed that Moore exposed his April Fool's prank, and the measure was withdrawn. After some publicity, he admitted, "No one reads these bills or resolutions. If someone gets up and says it's a good proposal, then everybody votes yes without reading it or even giving it a good second thought."
Moore also made news that year by becoming part of what the Texas media labeled the "Dirty Thirty", which were 30 House Members who stood against the politicans who had been charged with bribery and conspiracy by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission - such as then-Speaker of the House Gus Franklin Mutscher, then-Governor Preston Smith, and then-Lieutenant Governor Ben Barnes - in what became known as the Sharpstown Stock-Fraud Scandal.
While he paid a price for taking these stands (most turned their backs on him, and the rest of the "Dirty Thirty"), he is seen by many as a political hero.

Traveling throughout the United States (during most of the 20th century), especially in the south, was a daring feat for African-Americans of the time. Jim Crow laws had peppered the country with inhospitable areas for minorities, and many had to know where it was okay to spend a night, or even just get a bite to eat.
In 1935, Harlem postal worker, Victor Hugo Green, had the idea to publish a book collecting info on safe places across the U.S., and The Negro Motorist Green Book (aka The Green Book) was born.
First published in 1936, The Green Book had Mr. Green himself visiting restaurants, and inns, throughout New York state, with the publication going national not long after, and international in 1949. He printed 15,000 copies every year, with the exception of the war years of 1941 - 1945, where he ceased altogether. Though the book helped black families move across several states without being terrorized, Victor did not live to see the day this country would have no real need for his book, as it was published for six more years after his death in 1960.

THE EKUMEKU resistance is One of the Reasons The British Hates the Igbos!
The British-Igbo War That Lasted For 31 YEARS:
The resolutions of the Berlin conference of 1884-1885, gave European nations the rights to lay claim to lands and resources in Africa.
Britain, who had engaged in the trade with coastal cities before and during the 19th century, made bold their intentions to covet resources and rule over indigenous nations all over Africa. Tribes resisted the British invaders, and this led to protracted wars. Many African tribes put up a great fight against the superior fire power of the suppressive British.
One of such tribes are the Igbo people of ancient Biafra, who are now one of the three major tribes in Nigeria.
The Ekuemeku Movement was the name of Igbo army, that held the British at bay and fought them for 31 years.
The Ekumeku movement consisted of a great number of attacks and uprising by the Anioma people of land, against the British, from 1893-1914.
The Ekumeku warriors were bound by a secrete oath, and meticulously utilized guerrilla tactics to attack the British Royal company, who were determined to penetrate Igbo land. The Ekumeku warriors were drawn from thousands of Anioma youth from all parts of Anioma land.
As the war rages on, the Ekumeku warriors defended their rights tom live peacefully without foreign interjection, while the British used heavy armaments. They destroyed homes, farms, and roads, by bombardment.
The British invaded Ndoni in 1870 and bombarded Onicha-Ado (Onicha) on November 2nd, 1897, from River Niger. This set the tempo for the rest of the war. The Royal Niger Company was commanded by Major Festing. They engaged the Anioma people of Ibusa in 1898.
The battle was so severe in 0wa/Okwunzu, in 1904, that the commander W.E.B Crawford requested for more arms from the British headquarters to crush the Western Anioma communities. The people of Owa again in 1906 engaged the British in a gruesome battle that consumed the life of the British commander S. O. Crewe.
Ogwashi-Ukwu faced the British on the 2nd of November 1909, and dealt a heavy blow to the British, who sustained many casualties, with the death of H. C. Chapman.
The Ekumeku became a formidable force in Igbo land and was a great source of nationalism for the Anioma people. It also served as a uniting cord that held together various towns who were independent of each other in the past. The Igbo were a republican people and each town had a leadership that was drawn from its oldest of men and families.
The war would have lasted longer, and possibly ended in a British defeat, if the Anioma people had equivalent fire power, and had more allies from other great Igbo kingdoms and towns. But even at that point, other tribes were facing the British on their own.
After almost 20 years of battle, decided to strike with great force. And in December of 1902, they sent a powerful expedition to Anioma kingdom. A great number of towns were destroyed. Civilians and soldiers alike were killed. And their leaders were arrested and imprisoned.
After this, the British were sure that they had suppressed the Ekumeku military cult, and that victory was theirs. The British officers boasted: “the Ekumeku and other secret societies have been completely broken.”
To their greatest surprise, two years later, in 1904, the fearless Ekumeku rose again. The Igbo are a proud and egalitarian people. They don’t go down that easily.
When the Ekumeku started their renewed campaign, they changed tactics, and abandoned the guerrilla warfare style of 1989, for individual defense of each town.
The last battle began in 1909. There was a succession dispute in Ogwashi-ukwu, and the British tried to remove the rightful king and enthrone someone else. One of the heirs to the throne, Nzekwe, the son of the last Obi, sensed the plot of the British and went to war with them to fight for his inheritance.
On November 2nd 1909, the British sent an expedition to Ogwashi-ukwu to capture him, but they failed. No amount of fire power at that point could defeat or quench the sympathy and dedication of the people towards the Ekumeku. In Asaba, the sympathy for the Ekumeku was so high that the people had a disposition to throw off the already British government in certain parts.
At the time, the acting Lieutenant-governor of the Southern provinces sent an agitated telegram to Lagos. It read: “Whole country is above are… is the state of rebellion.”
After this, reinforcements were sent from Lokoja, for another confrontation at Akegbe. The war raged on, till 1914, when the Ekumeku movement was defeated. That was the same year, the Northern and Southern protectorates of Nigeria were joined as one country.
Some of the heroes of that 31-year war included Dunwku Isus of Onicha-Olona, Nwabuzo Iyogolo of Ogwashi-Ukwu, Awuno Ugbo, Obi of Akumazi, Aggbambu Oshue of Igbuzo, the Idabor of Issele-Ukwu, Ochei Aghaeze of Onicha-olona, Abuzu of Idumuje-Unor, Idegwu Otokpoike of Ubulu-Ukwu. These men are remembered in Anioma land till date.
The Ekumeku war remains one of most bravely fought wars and campaign against British rule and plundering. It later inspired other rebellions around Africa, such as the Mau Mau of Kenya.
The Ekumeku have long been defeated, and that kingdom is now part of the greater Igbo land, in today’s Nigeria. But no matter how far we travel in time, history always remembers that a brave tribe defended their ancestry, heritage and legacy against the tyranny of Wilberforce.

After months of turmoil and at tempts to block them, young people by the thousands were quietly gathering today near Strawberry Lake in a mountain valley west of here for what they termed a “religious fes tival.”
Early this morning there were about 7,000 people at the remote mountain site. Many of them carried their bedding and provisions on their back for as far as 16 miles. Another 750 persons were on the tortuous 1.5‐mile mountain trail that rises 1,000 feet up from a county road on the edge of Grand Lake into the Arapaho National Forest.
Still another 3,000 festival goers were making the long walk up the dusty road seven and a half miles from the paved highway, U.S. 34, to the base of the mountain trail.
‘Gathering of Tribes’ -
By midafternoon outlaw mo torcycle gang members, many with their club colors on their backs and wearing German type helmets, were roaring through Granby on their “chopper”‐style machines, also head ed for the mountain gathering.
The gathering was not a music festival but instead a “gathering of the tribes,” or communes, from across the na tion and was arranged by the Rainbow Family of Living Light, from Eugene, Ore.
They came to meditate in the forest, to chant prayers together, talk over things and play flutes and guitars and drums under the spruce and aspen trees.
Gov. John A. Love said 11 days ago that it was the state's aim to prevent the gathering, not just discourage the long haired young people. He handed over the job to Lieut. Gov. John Vanderhoof.
But the state's plans col lapsed under the weight of the thousands who came to Gran by. When the state barred all access to the campground, the young people hiked across the mountains to get there.
For a time, the state at tempted to bar all food from the lake, but, gave up after three days.
Instead, the state officials settled on a plan to bar the main roads to the site.
There were warnings of health epidermics but physicians at the lake said that things seemed to be under control. At the site there was little evidence of poor health condi tions.
Slit trentches for garbage and human waste were dug and promptly, covered over when full.
Dr. Kenneth C. Osgood, one of four physicians at the lake, said that one young man had fallen from a tree and ap parently broke a wrist and his back, and another apparently suffered an acute attack of appendicitis. Both were re moved by Colorado National Guard helicopters.
“We've got enough penicillin so we could treat half of New York City,” said Dr. Osgood, who is on leave from the Denver Department of Health and Hospitals.
Mrs. Dorothy E. Davidson, executive director of the Colo rado chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, called the state's efforts to block the event “a tragicomedy.” “It was comical because it had no trag ic consequences,” she said after climbing to the site and tour ing it today.
“At the same time, we should compliment state and local offi cials for their wisdom in not forcing the issue and precipi tating a violent confrontation.”
The A.C.L.U. went fruitlessly to both state and Federal courts to force an end to the state's roadblock.
Finally, however, it was the young people who decided the issue. About 3,000 marched out of Granby at 3 P.M. yesterday heading for the lake and the outnumbered police decided to let them through.
The young people had been gathering in Granby for seven days and townspeople said they were glad to see them go.
“I'll be glad when this is over,” Ken Vinsonhaler said at his motel west of Granby. “I've been losing $100 to $200 a day. The tourists aren't coming and this is the Fourth of July week end.”
Hikers arriving at the moun tain site were greeted by a sign that read “Welcome Home,” and they camped in a circle that extended about five miles around a marshy meadow.
Smoke from many fires fil tered through the trees and some of the young people strolled about naked.
An occasional marijuana ciga rette was passed around by some, but members of the Rain bow Family said they would oust anyone caught selling drugs. Little other drug use was evident.
One young man, viewing the mountain scene, said: “This was written by the finger of the Lord.”

John C. Lily is known as an early member of S.E.T.I., the inventor of the sensory-deprivation tank, and for his experiments with consciousness and psychedelics, but he also highly contributed to our knowledge of dolphin behavior and communication, helping create the United States Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.
In 1965, NASA sponsored him to head an experiment, based in the Virgin Islands, attempting to teach dolphins to speak English. He was given a male bottlenose dolphin, about age six, which they named Peter. He hired a local as an assistant; a vibrant, and cute 23-year-old, named Margaret Howe. Peter and Margaret were to live together for ten weeks. They would eat, play, and have classes where Peter was given instructions: such as trying to say, "Hello Margaret" (the animal could never get its m's right).
By week four, Peter would start to get frustrated with the classes, almost always furiously swimming around Margaret with an erection. The research assistant soon began to masturbate Peter, so as to relieve him. She claims she saw it as simply a clinical method to help him focus on their task. She says it was never sexual for her, but admitted it made her life with him "sensual". In the BBC documentary The Girl Who Talked to Dolphins (2014), Howe looked back, remembering how she would seriously miss Peter when he wasn't around, and saying she could never go back to calling him "a dolphin" (only using his name to reference him).
After the experiment, Peter was moved to another Lily-run tank in Miami, FL, while Margaret stayed behind. Within weeks the dolphin's health declined, and one day he swam to the bottom of his pool, and held his breath. Brokenhearted, and missing his newfound mate, Peter committed suicide. Though hurt by the news, Margaret married John Lovatt, the project's photographer.
The experiment later inspired the 1967 novel, by French author Robert Merle, Un animal doué de raison (A Sentient Animal). That book was then the basis for the 1973 box office flop The Day of the Dolphin, which starred George C. Scott, but the star dolphin, Alpha, was named "best animal actor" at the 24th Patsy Award, so scales balanced, I guess.

One of the Nazi scientists obtained under United States' Project Paperclip, Werner van Braun, had a dream about life in a space station, sometime in the 1950s. He presented NASA with the idea, and by 1963 they partnered up with the Department of Defense to build it. Plans were officially underway in 1969 with an order placed to McDonnell Douglas Corporation to spruce up some existing rockets.
On May 14th of 1973, NASA launched a modified Saturn V rocket from Florida with - what they originally called "The Orbital Workshop", but rechristened - "Skylab" aboard: the US's first space station. Originally shot up into space unmanned, NASA sent three manned-missions throughout Skylab's operation, each carrying three astronauts.
Sent up with the Apollo Telescope Mount, the crew was to perform quite a number of experiments, including a few on themselves, such as red blood cell metabolism checks, and constant urine analyses. The studies ranged from biological to technological, astronomical and personal. The third crew - (SL-4: consisting of Commander Gerald Carr, William Pogue (pilot), and Edward Gibson (science pilot) - were first time astronauts. Not used to the rigors of having to work in zero gravity, with the added troubles of bizarre sleep schedules, the crew began to complain to Mission Control of the workload. NASA was having none of it, and told the boys to get back to work. Six weeks in, the crew scheduled a one-day strike. All radio communication was cut off from Skylab's end. The crew spent the day sleeping, and long moments of just looking out the window into the majesty of space. The next day, Commander Carr contacted the operation's manager with demands of more free time, which Houston had to compromise on. The crew gave up their mutiny, and finished off their next six weeks with studies of the Sun.
Sadly, the original mission had damaged Sklylab, and the project was doomed from the start, as they realized - without full solar panel use - the ship could not collect enough energy to sustain long-term life. The third, and final crew, returned to Earth in February of 1974. The station stayed abandoned, as scientists debated as what to do. Skylab stayed in a parked orbit for years, until reactivation in 1978, after British mathematician Desmond King-Hele foretold of it crash-landing due to extreme solar flare activity.
This became a huge media event in 1979, as Skylab reentered the atmosphere, and people publicly prayed it wouldn't come crashing down on them, or dust us all with radioactive space germs on passing. While NASA aimed it southeast of Cape Town, South Africa, most of it burned upon reentry, with a large chunk falling in the desert of western Australia. The local government fined the U.S. space organization $400 for littering, which they have yet to pay.

Thomas Midgley Jr. (1889 - 1944) was a man of many inventions. He also, as "Daddy of the A-Bomb" Robert Oppenheimer said of himself when quoting the Bhagavad-Gita, had "become Death, destroyer of worlds".
Innocently enough, Midgley grew up in Columbus, OH, and graduated from Cornell University in 1911 as a mechanical engineer. With encouragement from his father, who was also an inventor, Thomas began to work for General Motors in 1916, and moved on to a subsidiary of GM, Dayton Research Laboratories, a little after. There, he figuratively spread his wings, and flew.
By 1921, Thomas Midgley Jr. developed a way to make engines stop rumbling, after being shut down, by adding Tetraethyllead (aka TEL) to gasoline, which earned him the Nichols Medal in 1923 from the American Chemical Society. After a number of deaths (10+) at the processing plant, Midgley held a press conference to demonstrate that it wasn't TEL causing the problem. He poured the additive over parts of his body, and even inhaled it for about a minute. Without letting many know he became ill from it, and took a vacation to Florida.
Upon his return, he transferred himself to GM's Frigidaire division. In 1927, he thought to compound fluorine into a hydrocarbon, and his development team believed that the carbon–fluorine bond would be stable enough to prevent releasing hydrogen fluoride. They soon created dichlorodifluoromethane, the world's first chlorofluorocarbon (aka CFC), and began to add what they called "Freon 12" to all new refrigerators. The chemical was later used in aerosol spray cans, and asthma inhalers. For all of this, he received the Perkin Medal from the Society of Chemical Industry (1937); awarded the American Chemical Society highest honor the Priestley Medal in 1941; the Willard Gibbs Award, and elected to the United States National Academy of Sciences, both in 1942. In 1944, he became chairman of the American Chemical Society, but was struck down by poliomyelitis, which partially paralyzed him. He put his mechanics engineering degree to work, and set up a system of wires, and pulleys, which would help get him out of bed. On the morning of November 2, 1955, he became tangled up in his contraption, and accidentally strangled himself.
It wasn't until 1956 that measurements of Ozone first began, and though the first worldwide measurements didn't start until 1978 (using the Nimbus-7 satellite), M.J. Molina, and F.S. Rowland, had already published a laboratory study in 1974 that showed CFC's breakdown Ozone.
Though championed in his day, today - this one man - is seen as one of the worst causes of pollution. It is estimated that due to leaded gasoline several million lives were cut short, with another several million's health effected negatively. Environmental historian J. R. McNeill wrote in his 2001 book, Something New Under the Sun: An Environmental History of the Twentieth-Century World, that Midgley "had more impact on the atmosphere than any other single organism in Earth's history."

As a philatelist, I'm big on weird stamp stories, and during World War II, the Office of Strategic Services (which later became the C.I.A.) performed an odd act of psychological warfare on the Germans, using stamps, with their Operation Cornflakes.
In this particular PSYOP mission, the department had bombers strike air raids on trains carrying mail, the first of which flew on January 5th, bombing a cargo line headed to Linz. A following plane would then drop thousands of envelopes, in hopes they would be picked up with the rest of the scattered mail, and delivered to unwitting households. Most envelopes contained copies of the Allies' German-language newspaper, Das Neue Deutschland, and all had fake stamps - some bearing the likeness of Hitler turning into a corpse.
Three types of stamps were made by the Office: a counterfeit 6 pf, and 12 pf, of the original, and the 12 pf version with the skull. The first two, like the original German stamps read "Deutsches Reich", meaning "German Empire", but the totenkopf forgeries read "Futsches Reich", threatening to turn them into a "Destroyed Empire."

The Nazi dog whistles are there: the Wolfsangel symbol, an ancient German insignia appropriated by the Nazis and then American neo-Nazi groups, printed on the flags; the rally was held on 8-8-88, an overt deployment of 88 — or "Heil Hitler" among neo-Nazis.
These exaltations of Nazism and Mansonite ideologies, Laycock explained, was likely an attempt to elevate the Church of Satan to the pantheon of these two hate movements in the public hive mind. And based on retroactive interviews with Rice and others, who explicitly disavowed Nazi ideologies, the defense could very well be mounted that they were just messing with Rivera and the media industry that preyed on tales of Satanic panic for viewership.
The footage available, after all, was recorded by a team for Rivera, by that point a daytime talk show host, for a special titled "Devil Worship: Exposing Satan's Underground" that aired that October. [end excerpt]

In the middle of much zaniness, an early incarnation of Nikolas Schreck's outfit fills the screen performing "1960 Cadillac Hearse" at—of all things—a Bar Mitzvah.
Radio Werewolf soon went on to lose longtime members, but gained the "Devil's Daughter" as Zeena LaVey (daughter of the Church of Satan's Anton LaVey) joined. They quickly dropped the rock 'n' roll and picked up MIDI keys; morphing into ambient, neo-classical, and martial industrial—all the while keeping their arms at a 45° angle. 81 years ago today Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union. Lest we forget the massive sacrifice the Soviet people made in the fight to destroy fascism. Every 7 of 10 Nazis were killed by a Red Army Soldier on the Eastern front.
The Soviets lost over 27,000,000 men, woman, and children in the genocidal fight for survival against Nazi fascist brutality.
The USSR consisted of 15 different countries at the time, lets look at one of the smaller countries in the Union, like Belarus, shall we?
The Nazis annihilated the civilian population simply because they were considered inferior Slavs by the German people. Over 10,000 villages and 1.2 million homes were destroyed in Belarus. Every one in four people was executed, often by either burning or freezing to death. The pre-war population was 5.5 million. That's 1.37 million lives, mostly civilians. There are thousands of villages in Belarus that USED to have populations, often times the Nazis moved in and wiped out the entire village, every man, woman, child, elderly, special needs, they showed absolutely no mercy in their genocidal cleansing. And due to this trauma, people never moved back, to this day. There's literally thousands of war monuments with MILLIONS of names of civilians, that includes hundreds of thousands of children, that were killed for no military or strategic purpose.
When the German people entered the Soviet Union, it wasn't a case of military conquest, it was an ethnic and religious genocide with the purpose of wiping out "inferior sub-humans".
Now take everything I've said, and apply it to the rest of the Soviet Union. The Germans never paid the price for the 27,000,000+ Soviets they executed, starved, burned, froze, tortured, etc to death.
Operation Barbarossa opened up the Eastern Front on June 22, 1941, in which more forces were committed than in any other theater of war in human history. The area saw some of the world's largest battles, most horrific atrocities, and highest casualties (for Soviet and Axis forces alike), all of which influenced the course of World War II and the subsequent history of the 20th century. The German armies eventually captured some five million Soviet Red Army troops. The Nazis deliberately starved to death or otherwise killed 4.3 million Soviet prisoners of war, and a vast number of civilians, as the "Hunger Plan" worked to solve German food shortages and exterminate the Slavic population through starvation. Mass shootings and gassing operations, carried out by the Nazis or willing collaborators, murdered over a million Soviet Jews as part of the Holocaust.
Lest we forget the sacrifice the Soviet people made ensuring, along with the Allies, the Nazis did succeed in their plan of brutal domination.

The architect of privatization was former First Deputy Prime Minister Anatoly Chubais, a darling of the U.S. and Western financial establishments. Chubais’s drastic and corrupt stewardship made him extremely unpopular. According to The New York Times, he “may be the most despised man in Russia.”
Essential to the implementation of Chubais’s policies was the enthusiastic support of the Clinton Administration and its key representative for economic assistance in Moscow, the Harvard Institute for International Development. Using the prestige of Harvard’s name and connections in the Administration, H.I.I.D. officials acquired virtual carte blanche over the U.S. economic aid program to Russia, with minimal oversight by the government agencies involved. With this access and their close alliance with Chubais and his circle, they allegedly profited on the side. Yet few Americans are aware of H.I.I.D.’s role in Russian privatization, and its suspected misuse of taxpayers’ funds.
At the recent U.S.-Russian Investment Symposium at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, Yuri Luzhkov, the Mayor of Moscow, made what might have seemed to many an impolite reference to his hosts. After castigating Chubais and his monetarist policies, Luzhkov, according to a report of the event, “singled out Harvard for the harm inflicted on the Russian economy by its advisers, who encouraged Chubais’s misguided approach to privatization and monetarism.” Luzhkov was referring to H.I.I.D. Chubais, who was delegated vast powers over the economy by Boris Yeltsin, was ousted in Yeltsin’s March purge, but in May he was given an immensely lucrative post as head of Unified Energy System, the country’s electricity monopoly. Some of the main actors with Harvard’s Russia project have yet to face a reckoning, but this may change if a current investigation by the U.S. government results in prosecutions.
The activities of H.I.I.D. in Russia provide some cautionary lessons on abuse of trust by supposedly disinterested foreign advisers, on U.S. arrogance and on the entire policy of support for a single Russian group of so-called reformers. The H.I.I.D. story is a familiar one in the ongoing saga of U.S. foreign policy disasters created by those said to be our “best and brightest.”
Through the late summer and fall of 1991, as the Soviet state fell apart, Harvard Professor Jeffrey Sachs and other Western economists participated in meetings at a dacha outside Moscow where young, pro-Yeltsin reformers planned Russia’s economic and political future. Sachs teamed up with Yegor Gaidar, Yeltsin’s first architect of economic reform, to promote a plan of “shock therapy” to swiftly eliminate most of the price controls and subsidies that had underpinned life for Soviet citizens for decades. Shock therapy produced more shock—not least, hyperinflation that hit 2,500 percent—than therapy. One result was the evaporation of much potential investment capital: the substantial savings of Russians. By November 1992, Gaidar was under attack for his failed policies and was soon pushed aside. When Gaidar came under seige, Sachs wrote a memo to one of Gaidar’s principal opponents, Ruslan Khasbulatov, Speaker of the Supreme Soviet, then the Russian parliament, offering advice and to help arrange Western aid and contacts in the U.S. Congress.
Enter Anatoly Chubais, a smooth, 42-year-old English-speaking would-be capitalist who became Yeltsin’s economic czar. Chubais, committed to “radical reform,” vowed to construct a market economy and sweep away the vestiges of Communism. The U.S. Agency for International Development (U.S.A.I.D.), without experience in the former Soviet Union, was readily persuaded to hand over the responsibility for reshaping the Russian economy to H.I.I.D., which was founded in 1974 to assist countries with social and economic reform.
H.I.I.D. had supporters high in the Administration. One was Lawrence Summers, himself a former Harvard economics professor, whom Clinton named Under Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs in 1993. Summers, now Deputy Treasury Secretary, had longstanding ties to the principals of Harvard’s project in Russia and its later project in Ukraine.
Summers hired a Harvard Ph.D., David Lipton (who had been vice president of Jeffrey D. Sachs and Associates, a consulting firm), to be Deputy Assistant Treasury Secretary for Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union. After Summers was promoted to Deputy Secretary, Lipton moved into Summers’s old job, assuming “broad responsibility” for all aspects of international economic policy development. Lipton co-wrote numerous papers with Sachs and served with him on consulting missions in Poland and Russia. “Jeff and David always came [to Russia] together,” said a Russian representative at the International Monetary Fund. “They were like an inseparable couple.” Sachs, who was named director of H.I.I.D. in 1995, lobbied for and received U.S.A.I.D. grants for the institute to work in Ukraine in 1996 and 1997.
Andrei Shleifer, a Russian-born émigré and already a tenured professor of economics at Harvard in his early 30s, became director of H.I.I.D.’s Russia project. Shleifer was also a protégé of Summers, with whom he received at least one foundation grant. Summers wrote a promotional blurb for Privatizing Russia (a 1995 book co-written by Shleifer and subsidized by H.I.I.D.) declaring that “the authors did remarkable things in Russia, and now they have written a remarkable book.”
Another Harvard player was a former World Bank consultant named Jonathan Hay, a Rhodes scholar who had attended Moscow’s Pushkin Institute for Russian Language. In 1991, while still at Harvard Law School, he had become a senior legal adviser to the G.K.I., the Russian state’s new privatization committee; the following year he was made H.I.I.D.’s general director in Moscow. The youthful Hay assumed vast powers over contractors, policies and program specifics; he not only controlled access to the Chubais circle but served as its mouthpiece. [end excerpt]

Mann examines the historical and economic circumstances leading to and surrounding the Bankruptcy Act of 1800. A professor of History and Law at the University of Pennsylvania, Mann constructs a detailed argument about the evolution of social thought on debt and the changing legal climate in the face of an economy increasing in complexity. Using correspondence and legislative records, Mann provides a first-hand look at the changing opinions of debtor-creditor relations, the appropriate punishments for insolvency, and the obstacles to legislative remedies.
At the beginning of the eighteenth century debt was equated with sin and the inability to pay one’s creditors was a moral failing. Over time commercial debt came to be viewed as a necessity. Economic growth and development expanded entrepreneurial prospects particularly after the French and Indian War; but increased opportunity also meant greater risks. The widening geographic circles of trade necessitated larger credit networks with expanding chains of credit. However, debt for the purpose of consumption remained an ethical lapse.
The larger distance prevented the creditor from effective monitoring of the debtor leading to societal adoption of a penalty approach to the enforcement of debt payment, the debtors’ prison. The accounts of the debtors’ prison are the most fascinating portions of this book. Confinement in the debtors’ prison acted as a guarantee of appearance in court. However, there were two ways to leave prison, by the debtor offering assets equal in value to the debt as security or finding someone to post bail and effectively act as a guarantor for the debt. Confinement to prison did not increase the chances of repayment for creditors. In many cases they were decreased due to the debtors’ inability to work.
Debtors unable to offer their own security or find another willing to do so waited in prison. Amazingly, the conditions in debtors’ prison were, in many cases, worse than those of regular prison. The state fed and clothed felons and criminals but not debtors. At times this presented perverse incentives to those with little chance of release from debtors’ prison, so they committed other crimes to move into the regular prison. Debtors did not share suffering equally in their prison. Wealthy debtors sent to prison to pay still had assets to draw upon and obtained private accommodations and even redecorated with some of the comforts of home. In some instances debtors even attempted to recapture a portion of the civility of society outside the prison walls, as well as their status within it, by creating a constitutional government. In the late 1790s, the debtors in the New York jail formed such a government complete with a legal structure, judges and other officers.
Both external groups and debtors within the prison attempted to improve conditions either through direct aid or moral suasion. Benevolent and charitable societies attempted to aid those in debtors’ prison through aid in the form of clothes and food as well as by calling the deplorable conditions in the prison to the attention of the general public. Some debtors also sponsored newspapers written and printed from the debtors’ prison in an attempt to raise the public profile of the persecution of debtors. The writing and imagery in these papers would equate the situation of the debtor with slavery, a representation that would resonate with many in the North but fail to become popular in the South. As criminal codes underwent revision in the 1790s prison terms replaced corporal forms of punishment for criminals but offered no modification of the indeterminate sentence of a debtor, strengthening the parallels drawn between debtors and slaves.
There were some private and public relief measures for debtors prior to the Bankruptcy Act of 1800. Creditors could grant letters of license allowing debtors temporary freedom from actions by creditors, hoping that the debtors would be able to recover their financial status and meet their obligations. Private compositions required the debtor to turn over all their assets, usually less a few exempted items such as bedding, for distribution among creditors. Some debtors declined to use insolvency laws to free themselves from debtors’ prison because of the requirement that they give up all but a small amount of exempt property. By forfeiting all their assets, they feared they would be unable to recover their former position and status in society.
Some debtors had the ability to leave the immediate confines of the prison to beg, possibly work, or maybe even find a way to pay off creditors. At other times legislatures enacted temporary bankruptcy laws to provide relief to debtors, such as the colonies of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York in the late 1750s and the states of Pennsylvania and New York in the 1780s. Tools such as the poor debtor’s oath and indentured servitude were used to remove smaller debtors from prison but were not available to the developing class of commercial debtors. These individuals amassed enormous fortunes and consequently suffered enormous losses. In some situations these speculators, such as William Duer and Robert Morris, caused financial panics. These debtors became the driving force behind a federal bankruptcy law, while also dooming that legislation to failure.
Bankruptcy relief was not traditionally available to all, only to commercial occupations such as merchants. The chief target of bankruptcy relief was the merchant because the risks they faced in business could not be avoided. However, as commerce expanded in the U.S. and the networks of credit became larger, the ability to distinguish between professional merchants and traders and others less involved in trade diminished, allowing many more to take advantage of bankruptcy laws than conceived by legislators. The intention of the act was for bankruptcy proceedings to be initiated by creditors, but many debtors found ways around this restriction. By working cooperatively with creditors that were related or sympathetic, the debtor could effectively initiate the proceedings. While the frequency of such cases cannot be determined, Mann offers persuasive evidence that many debtors availed themselves of this loophole. [end excerpt]

In 1844 the British annexed Natal. The largely British settlers were acutely aware that to the north there was a powerful Zulus state, and as a result considerable interest in Zulu customs and traditions was generated.
Captain Francis Gardiner (1794-1851), a commander in the Royal Navy and a devoted missionary, who was later to die of starvation along with missionary companions on a desert island in Tierra del Fuego, went on a journey traveling east from the Cape to Natl. Upon his first encounter with the Zulus, he took their customs to be “apparently of Jewish origin” and the Zulus themselves to be of Jewish extraction. The Zulu customs that led him to this conclusion included circumcision, levirate marriage, the festival of the first fruits, and a number of others. In 1835 Gardiner was sent to negotiate a peace with the Zulu chief Dingane at his winter home, Kwa-khangela, near present-day Eshowe. Upon his return after lengthy and detailed talks about every aspect of Zulu life, Gardiner reported that Zulu religious beliefs were quite simply “a remnant of pre-Christian Judaism.” As British power was extended farther east, the same discourse continued.
Throughout the 1850s Zulus continued to be racially constructed as Jews. Their settled, pastoral life and their religious and social customs were evidence enough of this. G. R. Peppercorne, the magistrate of Pafana Location, observed to the Native Affairs Commission that “a general type of the customs and laws of the Ama-Zulu may be found in the early history of the Hebrews.” Zulu polygamy, marriage customs, even attitudes toward work were all described in the appropriate biblical passage. He suggested that any European who wanted to understand Zulu customs had only to read the Old Testament. Henry Francis Fynn (1803-1861), an English traveler, trader, and an acknowledged expert on Zulu customs, left behind a diary that is one of the best sources on the history of the Zulus. The diary covers the period from 1824 to 1036, when Fynn was living much of the time with the Zulus. “I was surprised,” he wrote, “to find a considerable resemblance between many of the Zulu customs and those of the Jews.” These included “war offerings, sin offerings, propitiatory offerings, Festival of first fruits… periods of uncleanness, on the decease of relatives and touching the dead, Circumcision; Rules regarding chastity, rejection of swine’s flesh.” Fynn concluded in the usual way of the Hamitic hypothesis that in view of “the nature of semblance of many of their customs to those of the ancient Jews, as prescribed under the Levitical priesthood I am led to form the opinion that the Zulu tribes have been very superior to what they are at the present time.”
A similar analysis was made by John Colenso (1814-1883), the famous Cambridge-educated biblical scholar, mathematician, and Christian socialist who was ordained bishop of Natal in 1853. He arrived in Natal the following year and quickly became fluent in Zulu (he went on to publish a grammar and dictionary of the language). Colenso was convinced that the two Zulu names for God embraced perfectly the notions of the divine “contained in Hebrew words Elohim and Yahweh.” So close indeed were the resemblances, according to Colenso, that frequently he suggested that anyone who wanted to really understand the Bible had best study Zulu customs. Zulu “habits and even the nature of their country so nearly correspond to those of the ancient Israelites, that the very scenes are brought continually, as it were, before their eyes, and vividly realized in a practical point of view.” Practically everything about the Zulus, from their lunar calendar to the order of religious feasts, seemed to reflect an Israelite past.” The Zulu keep his annual feasts, and observes the New Moons as the old Hebrew did.

In 1987, Tallahassee police came upon two men - in suit and ties - watching over a group of two girls and four boys, aged 2 to 7, at a public park. When questioned, the men said they were on their way to Mexico, taking the children to a school there. Upon inspection, the kids looked unbathed, malnourished, and could not tell the officers any of their mother's names. The two men, Douglas Edward Zimmerman, 27, and Michael Houlihan, 28, were arrested.
It was soon learned they were members of a hippie cult from the Washington D.C. area, who call themselves "The Finders", founded by retired USAF Master Sgt. Marion David Pettie. The District of Columbia Police Department became involved, with Capt. William White III, acting as spokesman over the case. Both the arrested men were charged with one count of felony child abuse, held for $100,000 bond, and booked into the Leon County Jail. The six children had to be moved from their Florida shelter to an undisclosed location protected by armed guards because officials kept receiving threatening phone calls. D.C. Detective James Bradley had already been suspicions the cult was involved in child porn, and used the arrest to get a search warrant on all five of the Finders' properties, with backing from Ramon Martinez and Lynwood Rountree of the Department of the Treasury. On February 5, 1987, they raided homes, farm land and one warehouse, which contained a library, several kitchens, a sauna, and hot tub, plus a video production room, as well as several jars of urine and feces. The officers seized cabinets full of documents on activities of the organization in different parts of the world, including London, Germany, Japan, the Bahamas, Hong Kong, and Africa. There were intelligence files on private families, where a Finders member would respond to local ads for baby-sitters, and collect as much information as possible about the unsuspecting family. Though there was no proof found that the group was guilty of sexually abusing kids, the Federal Bureau of Investigation was ready to enter the case, believing children were at least being trafficked - against their will - across state lines, as well as internationally.
The story gained local press in Florida and Washington D.C., but was soon picked up by The NY Times ("Inquiry Spreads on 6 Children and Cult", 1987-02-08, nytimes.com/1987/02/08/us/inquiry-spreads-on-6-children-and-cult.html) [archive.ph/vZJPA].
In April, the State Department told the courts to free everyone, and give back their passports so they could go on their merry way. All the Metropolitan Police Department files on the case were deemed classified by the Central Intelligence Agency, and the F.B.I. Foreign Counterintelligence Division requested the D.C. Police no longer contact them on the matter. The press went quiet about it too. No other article appeared until the case was lightly brushed over in a U.S. News & World Report 1993 exposé of the cult. Luckily, much of the earlier reports are still available (scribd.com/doc/70996637/Finders-Cult) [archive.ph/uo1Tq], so we can share this odd story with our kids, and let them know that there may actually be bogeymen out there.
By the 90s, cult leader Marion Pettie expanded the organization into dozens of properties throughout the U.S., with real estate holdings estimated to be worth over 2.2 million dollars at the time. Since, several members have left the group, with several complaints lodged, but none involve children.
Some say this story is proof enough the C.I.A. had its hands in some nefarious places, while others think the founder's son and wife, both employees of the Agency, pulled some strings to get the whole thing shut down. Would the C.I.A. stick its neck out for a secretary? Could they, as author of Spies and Provocateurs: An Encyclopedia of Espionage and Covert Action, Wendell Minnick claims, admit to "owning the Finders organization as a front [...] but that it had gone bad"? It all brings up so many more questions, I'm not sure I can sleep.

NIST also acknowledged that it understood that Dr. Wood was asserting that some of NIST’s contractors were in a position to confirm the use of DEW precisely because they, themselves, were manufacturers and developers of such weaponry. Among the contractors that NIST utilized to help it prepare the NCSTAR 1 report, for which corrections were sought, was Applied Research Associates, Inc., which, it turns out, is a founding sponsor of the Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS).
Other sponsors of DEPS were also substantially involved in the preparation of NCSTAR 1 for NIST, including Science Applications International Corp (SAIC). NIST indicated that while it did a background check to assure there were no conflicts of interest, it did not know that ARA was a manufacturer of DEW. In her appeal, Dr. Wood presents ample information confirming that NIST should have known of ARA’s involvement with DEW. Significantly, NIST has acknowledged Dr. Wood’s appeal by posting a copy on its Website. James H. Fetzer, founder of Scholars for 9/11 Truth, observed, “This means they are taking it seriously.”
In 2005, a number of reports were issued by NIST that were meant to explain how the Twin Towers were completely destroyed. Its basic report, designated NCSTAR 1, runs around 298 pages. She was able to pursue these issues under the DQA, because it directs the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to issue government-wide guidelines that “provide policy and procedural guidance to Federal agencies for ensuring and maximizing the quality, objectivity, utility, and integrity of information (including statistical information) disseminated by Federal agencies.” [...]
In a letter dated July 27, 2007, Catherine Fletcher of NIST commented on Dr. Wood’s original RFC, stating, “NIST has examined the photographs you provided in conjunction with all the other evidence and has found that the evidence does not support a theory involving directed energy weapons.” She also stated, “ARA was determined not to have an organizational conflict of interest”. Finally, she added, “NIST is denying your request for correction because the NIST analysis of the initiation of the collapse of the WTC towers was thorough and based on all of the available evidence, and NIST continues to believe that the report is not fraudulent, deceptive or misleading.”
The Data Quality Act, however, includes a “right of appeal” of NIST’s response and Dr. Wood has worked to further document a significant conflict of interest between ARA and some of the analyses NIST used in its reports. In her appeal of August 22, 2007, Dr. Wood makes six key assertions, including that NIST should have known that Applied Research Associates (ARA) is “a significant manufacturer of directed energy weapons and/or components thereof.” Additionally, Dr. Wood states, “NIST should have detected evidence of the use of such weaponry even in the context of NIST’s intentional and, I assert, improper limitation of its investigation into ‘the sequence of events leading up to the ‘collapse’ of the Twin Towers.’ ” [end excerpt]

A teenage gunman admitted shooting Michael Zebuhr in a panic during a robbery in Minneapolis’ Uptown neighborhood a year ago, but the Internet still buzzes with conspiracy theories about who killed the visiting doctoral student and why.
Zebuhr’s death, which prompted outcries against random violence, also sparked talk of sinister plots involving the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and a government coverup.
Even with shooter Billy Ray Deshawn Johnson scheduled to get a 30-year prison sentence today, the conspiracy theories live on.
Zebuhr, 25, was a Clemson University student and member of a group called Scholars for 9/11 Truth, which contends there is evidence the U.S. government orchestrated the Sept. 11 attacks, or at least allowed them to happen.
A Web site at www.michael zebuhr.blogspot.com questions whether Zebuhr was a random victim. Zebuhr’s work with the Sept. 11 group “led several professors, including me, to wonder if MZ was killed – not because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time during an armed robbery – but because of his participation in the effort to expose 9/11 as an inside job,” wrote Morgan Reynolds, a professor emeritus at Texas AM University and a member of the group.
Killing Zebuhr “would have a chilling effect on scholars” and others skeptical of the government’s story, Reynolds wrote.
A prominent member of the Sept. 11 group, Judy Wood, was one of Zebuhr’s professors at Clemson.
Daryl Bradford Smith, on his Web site www.iamthewitness.com, has another take on Zebuhr’s murder: that two of Zebuhr’s fellow Sept. 11 skeptics somehow helped the government kill him.
And sprinkled through the online writings are allegations that the Minneapolis police were suppressing evidence in the case.
Police Lt. Amelia Huffman denied the rumors, saying the crime was fully investigated.
